What This Grant Path Covers

A backwater valve—also searched as a sewer check valve or sewer backflow valve—is installed on the sanitary building drain to reduce reverse sewer flow into the home. The current City program lists 90% of eligible cost up to a maximum of $1,800 for an approved backwater-valve installation.

Approval Sequence

1. Confirm the applicant, property, and proposed work meet current program requirements.
2. Collect the required number of itemized estimates.
3. Submit the City application before work starts.
4. Wait for written approval.
5. Complete required permits, approved construction, and inspection.
6. Submit the final invoice, payment proof, and other required reimbursement documents.

Quote Checklist

• Device type, manufacturer/model, size, and installation location.
• How the sanitary line and fixtures were assessed.
• Concrete cutting, excavation, pipe work, access cover, and restoration.
• Materials and labour shown separately.
• Permit application, fees, inspection, and correction responsibility.

How Many Estimates?

The by-law calls for one estimate below $5,000, two from $5,000 through $10,000, and three above $10,000. Do not begin demolition or installation while quotes or the application are under review.

Cap Example

If the City accepts $2,000 as eligible cost before HST, the tax-inclusive amount is $2,260 and 90% is $2,034. Because that exceeds the $1,800 cap, the planning estimate is an $1,800 grant and $460 homeowner amount. Actual eligible cost and payment are determined by the City.
