Flooded basement in London right now?
Emergency Basement Flooding Cleanup Steps
If water or sewage is already in the basement, prioritize safety and documentation first. Then stabilize the space and plan the prevention work so this does not happen again.
First 15 Minutes
- Stay out of standing water if outlets, the panel, furnace, or appliances may be affected.
- Do not keep flushing toilets or running fixtures if sewage is backing up through floor drains.
- Take photos and video before moving items, including water lines and drain locations.
First 24 Hours
- Call your insurer and ask what documentation they require before disposal.
- Remove saturated porous materials that cannot be safely dried.
- Start air movement, dehumidification, and cleanup as soon as the space is safe.
After Cleanup: Prevent the Next Flood
Once the emergency is stable, do not rush straight into concrete cutting or pump work. Under By-law A.-7562-160, City grant work must be approved in writing before construction starts. Sump discharge planning may also need to comply with Drainage By-law WM-4.
Use the diagnostic quiz to decide whether the symptoms point toward a backwater valve, a sump pump, or both.
